MS-102 study guide: Microsoft 365 Administrator
Tenant, identity, threat protection and compliance in one exam. Broad rather than deep, and that breadth is what people underestimate.
MS-102 retires on 30 November 2026
Microsoft has announced that the MS-102 exam and the Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert certification retire on 30 November 2026. After that date it can no longer be earned or renewed, and no replacement has been announced. Only start this exam if you can sit it well before then.
The shape of this exam
MS-102 covers tenant configuration, identity synchronisation, Defender XDR and Purview compliance. That is four products' worth of surface area in one exam, which makes it wide rather than difficult.
The failure mode is not that any single area is hard. It is that candidates prepare thoroughly for the two areas they work with and skim the other two.
The four areas, and what each really tests
Tenant and identity
Domains, Entra Connect, synchronisation troubleshooting, authentication methods. The synchronisation questions assume you have seen sync fail.
Role-based access and delegation
Which admin role grants what, and the principle of granting the narrowest one. Frequently tested through scenarios where several roles would technically work.
Threat protection with Defender XDR
Policy configuration across Office, Endpoint and Identity, and reading an incident that spans them.
Compliance with Purview
Labels, DLP, retention, eDiscovery basics. Enough to configure, not the depth of SC-401.
The verdict
Worth it only if you administer a tenant and can sit it before 30 November 2026
It maps to the actual breadth of a Microsoft 365 administrator role better than any other single exam.
Skip it if you are specialising. SC-300 for identity or SC-401 for information protection go deeper and are worth more in a specialist role.
