Defender for Business or Defender for Endpoint P1: the honest comparison
Two Microsoft products with overlapping licensing, a 300-seat cliff that catches people out, and a decision most organisations get wrong by exactly one tier.
The decision in one paragraph
Defender for Business is included with Microsoft 365 Business Premium and is capped at 300 seats. Defender for Endpoint Plan 1 is available to enterprise licensing without that cap. If you are under 300 seats and already hold Business Premium, you almost certainly already own the answer and do not need to buy anything. The mistake is buying a second product you were already licensed for.

The 300-seat cliff
The cap is the part that catches organisations out, because it is not a soft limit you grow through gracefully. An organisation sitting at 280 seats and hiring is making a licensing decision with a hard edge roughly a year away, and the migration is not simply a licence swap: the management experience changes.
If you are within reach of the cap, plan for the enterprise tier now rather than deploying twice.
What neither of them is
Neither product is a managed service. Both generate alerts that somebody has to triage, and the most common failure we see is not a licensing choice at all, it is a well-licensed tenant with nobody reading the console. If you have no capacity to respond, buying the higher tier does not fix it, and a managed detection and response provider is the honest answer.
The verdict
Defender for Business, if you hold Business Premium and are under 300 seats
You already own it. Deploy it properly, tune the attack surface reduction rules, and spend the saved licence budget on someone to actually watch the alerts.
Defender for Endpoint P1
The right answer above 300 seats, or when you are close enough to the cap that deploying twice would cost more than the tier difference.
Skip both as a purchase decision if you already hold Microsoft 365 E5 or the E5 Security add-on, which include Plan 2 and make this comparison irrelevant.
